Ideas of games with cards of English letters.
1. Cards can be shuffled and laid out alphabetically for speed
2. You can give children capital letters and call out small ones like lotto or bingo.
3. From cards you can make homemade dominoes, stick cards with letters on homemade templates.
4. You can play the famous game memory. Choose cards of large and small 10 letters and lay out a 4x5 rectangle from them. Open cards in pairs and if you get a pair of letters matching put that pair aside. To give the game the spirit of competition, you can count the number of attempts, the participant who makes the least number of attempts will win. You can enlarge the rectangle and make it 6x6 cards (18 pairs of letters) and even 6x7 (21 pairs of letters).
5. And finally, you can add words from cards, but be careful, in order to add some words you will need more than one set of cards with letters. For the simple word book, we already need 2 sets of cards, and to add the word hippopotamus we will have to print as many as 3 sets of cards with letters.

Hello my dear readers.
The English alphabet for children and even for adults who are just starting to learn the language is a rather complicated thing, because they still do not know anything at all, and pronunciation for a beginner is still a challenge. But you have to deal with it.
Therefore, today we are waiting for a lesson on how to remember it faster and more efficiently. I will have for you exhaustive amount of materials for visual reference ( pictures, cards, letters with transcription and pronunciation), listening ( songs, audio), view ( video), download and print ( cards, poster (word, pdf)), as well as to consolidate the new with the help of interesting games and tasks.
Today I have prepared for you pictures that you can not only read and listen to online on my site, but also print yourself and teach in any free minute. First, look at the entire alphabet (click on the image to enlarge), listen to all its letters, and then listen to its classic song that has long been loved by everyone:
If you listen to these 2 songs as well, you will understand that there is an American version of the pronunciation of the alphabet, the only difference being in the pronunciation of the last letter. Let this be a trifle, but you need to know about it!
For many to help, there is a special audiobook for the little ones - "Alphabet for children" from the publishing house Litres.
And here is the alphabet with uppercase and lowercase letters. Try the following task with your child:
- look at the picture next to the letter and name the word in Russian,
- find the corresponding English word in the Russian-English dictionary,
- check if it starts with the letter indicated in the alphabet,
- write down the English letter and the word in a notebook or notepad and draw a picture next to it.
An alphabet with English and Russian transcription of letters will help to pronounce them correctly.
And you can study these letters with words online - watching and listening to their pronunciation.
And here is the promised word file for download and printout. For each the letters have my own english word. On page A4, 2 letters each.
How to work with him:
- Print out.
- Take colored pencils or felt-tip pens and decorate letters with the child (you can do this in the same way as the picture - add eyes or a mouth).
- Try to draw what is written next to each letter.
- In the process, be sure to tell the child about painted objects or animals or ask him questions about them.
- Work slowly with each letter: First say it several times with different intonations, pitch, etc., then say the word written next to it. Then you can take 2 letters (previously cut into separate cards) and show them to the child - try to give him the opportunity to show the correct letter from the 2 named by you.
- If your child is already 5 years old, you can learn not only capital letters, but also uppercase. It is necessary to explain to the kid that each letter has its own younger brother, who is shorter and sometimes different from the older one (in the picture below you can see them). On printed cards, you can draw younger ones next to the older brothers - all the guys should like this!
I have another word file for you, where, unlike the previous one, colorful uppercase and lowercase letters as well English and Russian transcription for the correct pronunciation. On sheet A4 - 2 letters. Download and enjoy your health with your child:
And this is a pdf poster with the English alphabet - for print. It can be printed on A4 or A3. Colorful English letters are supplemented with transcription (Russian and English), which will help any child and adult quickly remember English letters and their correct sound.
Alphabet in colorful videos
Yes, the most effective and fastest way for a child to learn new English letters is to watch a video as well. Now it’s not difficult to find them. Here are some fun ones:
And here is a whole series of cartoons, each of which is dedicated to a separate English letter. The video is Russian-language.
The last two videos are very good material for learning not only English letters, but also the sounds they give in some words.
Poems
Video is always fun, but what about poems for quickly memorizing English letters? Did not try? Then go ahead! Children really like them. Click on the icon in the upper right corner for increase...
Games and tasks
I can offer you at least 10 more entertaining games and tasks to remember new for the child letters of the English alphabet and their sequence ( about learning in games for children also read and) These games can be played as one-on-one with a childso organize them for a group of children.
- Learning with the ball
Variations of fun with a ball for children can be very different. For example, you can throw a ball to each other and take turns calling the next letter. Or, for example, throw the ball against the wall and call it with each hit.
- Draw a letter
- Guessing Cards
Try this option: you show your baby a picture with an apple - and he calls you “a” - apple. Or you show a kitten, and he calls you “c” - cat. Of course, this game is more likely to be remembered and is suitable for more conscious children. But for the repetition of what she learned, it is perfect like no other.
- Alphabetic train
The goal of this easy task game is to put a train, each wagon of which should stand in its place, from a bunch of cards with English letters. Only then will he go!
- Stop song
The task here is to carefully listen to the alphabetical song, and when the recording stops (the adult pauses anywhere in the song), the children should repeat the last letter they heard and show a card with it.
- Neighbors
From a handful of cards with letters turned upside down, the child chooses any. The task is to recall the neighbor letter of the one in the hands of the child. In this case, you can call the previous letter or the next. Any answer will be correct.
- Guess faster
The goal of the game is to guess as quickly as possible what letter an adult writes (who slowly and slowly in parts displays a large English letter on a board or sheet of paper).
- Add a dance to the song
One of my students was wildly restless. And in order to learn everything, we had to come up with a real dance with her, where under each letter we made a new movement that resembled it in form. It’s amazing and incredibly strange, I tell you, but we managed to master it.
- Point Connectors
This interesting and beloved activity by all the guys will help them quickly remember not only the letters of the English alphabet, but also their sequence. Here are 4 such pictures that you can download, print and use.
- Letter - picture
Another fascinating activity that will require children to know words (rather, it will be the association of a letter with a picture) starting with one or another letter of the alphabet. Here, preliminary preparation and work with picture words are needed. These are the 6 pictures for printing I found on the website "Preschool" (kindereducation.com). We connect letters with the necessary pictures, and then we decorate for fun.
Do not try to do everything through power. From my experience working with children, I know that if you do not interest them, but force them to remember something, there will be absolutely no effect. The kid will only hate the language, and then it will be even more difficult for you and him ( Where to start teaching a child English).
Also, do not attempt to memorize by heart without the help of a song, video, or photo. The child will not even begin to include his “memory” processes. These words should glow red in your mind when it comes to learning: IT SHOULD BE INTERESTING!
And finally, he should somehow understand why this is necessary. Yes, it’s hard to explain to a little man 3-5 years old why he should learn any other sounds at all, if everyone speaks on those that he already knows. So come up with something, or look at it with a cartoon where individual words speak a foreign language. This, perhaps, will awaken in him a desire to learn them himself.
- You can get a wonderful sound alphabet with your favorite characters, for example Toy book with the English alphabet "Dasha the traveler"
- If your child is under 5 years old, you can try Fascinating puzzles with English letters
- And everyone’s favorite service for online learning English in a game form LinguaLeo has released a new course “ English for the little ones". Training in this course begins with the basics - the alphabet. I recommend this service and all its products, as it has already won my trust by the quality of the approach to teaching children and adults. You can watch my short review of the course in the video below.
And finally ...
Of course, all children are different, and not all methods of work will suit all. Therefore, I can immediately advise you to look for the right path to your baby. He will love English if you show it to him in the right light.
And remember, my dears, that I regularly share tips on how to help you and your children learn the language effectively. Subscribe to my blog newsletter and stay tuned. Soon it will be even more interesting.

So that the process of learning English does not become uninteresting, dry, boring and boring, it needs to be diversified. This is especially important for children. You can make the learning process interesting in different ways: use different games, alternate activities, watch videos, listen to audio, communicate with native speakers. And sometimes it’s enough to use a variety of handouts.
Download cards with the alphabet uppercase and lowercase letters
Which games can use cards with English letters?
To make it interesting for children, and for yourself, you can use cards with the alphabet for various games. For example:
- Letters can be mixed and then alphabetically folded at speed
- You can give out capital letters to the children, the so-called capital letters, and ask them to find a couple - small letters
- You can separate the large and small letters, take 10−20 pairs, mix, and without looking to spread it on any surface with the image down. You need to open cards in pairs, trying to remember where which one is. If you open the pair, then put it aside
- You can add words or play in the “Field of Miracles”. However, note that in this case you will have to download and print several sets. Since for the usual word football, you will need 2 sets, and for a more complex one, such as hippopotamus, as many as 3 sets!
Learn, work on the materials you have chosen and you will succeed! We believe in you!
